PB&J
Jim Groves (guitar, vocals), Bill Jenkins (bass, multi-instrumentalist), and Paul Fraunfelter (drums) form a three-piece powerhouse with a playlist as diverse as their influences. With roots in classic rock, blues, jazz, and psychedelic jams, the band thrives on taking audiences on an unpredictable musical ride—from deep cuts and hidden gems to beloved classics.
Jim, a devoted Deadhead, brings the unmistakable Garcia-inspired tone to both electric and acoustic guitar. His solos are a staple of the set, weaving through songs with fluid improvisation. Bill, his musical partner for nearly two decades, is a master of the bass—but if it has strings, he can play it. His versatility and ear for arrangement help keep the music fresh and adventurous. Behind them, Paul fuels the groove with a love for prog rock, adding rhythmic complexity and drive that elevates every performance.
The band’s repertoire numbers in the hundreds, blending Pink Floyd, Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Jimmy Cliff, 50s rock ’n’ roll, early 60s hits, 90s alt-rock, and more. A single set might move from a blues shuffle to a jazz-infused jam to a psychedelic rock journey—sometimes all in one song. Expect deep grooves, unexpected turns, and the kind of energy that makes each show a one-of-a-kind experience.
Handsome Jim Groves and the Hornswoggling Codswallowers started during the COVID crisis. It was Maryland Meadworks that decided to have music outside and the owner reached out to see if I could pull a band together. Well, of course I could! Joe Atkins, Sam Atkins and Maureen Farrington (who you may know from the Wild Anacostia's and many other bands) joined me in bringing live music back to the people. There is a whole story about the name of the band which I won't waste the bandwidth to explain here. Just know that we think of ourselves as if we were our favorite college radio station from back in the mid to late 80's. From Blues to Jazz to Rock to Grateful Dead to Pop to Reggae. We play what we like!

Bill Jenkins and I have a stash of over 100 tunes we like to unleash on unsuspecting audiences. Bill’s the undisputed boss of the bass, but don’t be surprised if he whips out a harmonica, slide guitar, or some mysterious stringed thing you’ve never seen before—if it’s got strings, Bill probably owns it, names it, and plays it like a pro. When the sun’s shining, we hit the farmers' markets, spreading good vibes (and maybe a little mischief), plus the occasional cozy show at smaller venues.
With Todd Baker (Cravin' Dogs fiddler and my neighbor!!)
With Tom Lyons - Toms in many Bluegrass bands and is top notch.
With Archie Edwards Blues Heritage Foundation Ambassadors. I spend a lot of Saturdays with these blues players.
Gratefully Irish - I mix in Irish Pub Songs with Grateful Dead tunes. Best of both worlds!
